INSIGHT (what we need)

Counter the negative effects of harmful EMF radiation with every day fabrics and furnishings.

Where a lot of the textile science is moving towards ‘interactive’ clothing and smart fabrics that extend the interface of our digital connection, there’s arguably more of a need to be less of a sponge and more of a shield!

Researching health implications of harmful EMF (electromagnetic frequencies) seems to have ebbed and flowed this past decade, making barely a splash, amidst the continuous pipeline of smart gadgetry promising a future of Jetsons-like automation and optimization. Our homes are now AI-genies: with fridges that help us shop after detecting missing ingredients, toilets that send doctors our specimen data, and orchestral light and temperature controls that optimize our circadian clocks. We are encroaching an era of super smart abodes that are so intertwined with our biology, we could so much as let out an unrecognizably stinky fart to a slew of data alerts to check our health status and immediately adopt diet changes. Can’t wait to be judged by Alexa.

Instead of building digital palaces, we are in danger of designing emission prisons. Harmful, man-made EMFs distort the charges of natural EMFs, linked to adverse repercussions to our health. But long-term exposure has not been researched enough to draw conclusions that would set strict standards for exposure. So until then, we see correlative effects like weakened immune systems, irregular heartbeats, infertility issues, abnormal cell growth, inflammation, depression, and fatigue. Similar to the reductive studies that can no longer pinpoint singular lotion or shampoo ingredients that have detrimental carcinogenic properties, harmful EMF exposure also requires looking across time, volume and intensity exposure to truly understand lifetime repercussions.

Remember that rare feeling of being truly disconnected on a mountaintop above any cell tower access? When your nervous system reached a level of calm that felt almost ethereal? That’s how far away we are from a healthy baseline of EMF normalcy. These negative emission-free oases (NEFOs!) may just become the final bastions of not just nature escapes but future hospitality. Until then, we continue to crowd our spaces and surfaces with a desire to be more “connected”. Soon, our homes, clothing and accessories will be the new connected interface of our lives. But to what consequences?

How might we design our environments and personal space to be more EMF filters and shields rather than emitters?

INSPIRATION (what we want)

Photonic: a credit card-sized device that creates healthier zones to live, work and travel by minimizing the harmful effects of wireless radiation sources (EMF’s); such as smart technology, wifi routers and geo-pathic stress zones.

  • This Photonic Shield device is a multi-layered structure that is constructed of specific metal alloys and dielectric materials that claim to deflect the emissions of harmful EMFs from various devices.

  • The shapes of the resonant structures and the characteristics of the photonic shield crystal materials are calculated and formed based on the interaction of the electromagnetic fields with biological objects, water structures and circular polarization of right hand rotation. All claiming to convert background radiation into frequencies that do not harm biological objects.

  • Preserve the natural state of your health, feel energized, initiate the self-healing process and protect yourself from harmful artificial influences.

Note: we don’t necessarily endorse the efficacy of this unregulated product – but like where they’re headed – hence being this week’s inspiration!

INNOVATION (what we wish for)

Faraday Fashion & Furnishings: a collection available at your favorite eco-friendly retailer that also offers “shielding as a service”.

Instead of mould and termite inspectors, why not an EMF inspector? But affordable and with design sense. Faraday radiation consultants (homage to the famed ‘Faraday Cage’ invented way back in 1836) come to your home to detect harmful EMF radiation with detection equipment and a stylist team to redesign your spaces so that they are less exposed.

  • Consultants scan the home’s continuous exposure from both external and internal sources . They also interview tenants to understand daily behavior and device usage to design a plan for optimal net charges.

  • Get your home kitted out with aesthetically-neutral faraday lounges, beds, curtains, throw blankets or wallpaper that effectively redistribute charges to minimize unwanted EMFs in select spaces.

  • Harmful EMF-minimizing utility clothing (ie. jackets or pajamas) and accessories (ie. cell phone covers or electronics covers) protect your body from the adverse effects of long-term exposure from man-made radiation.

  • By minimizing (and not entirely eradicating EMF exposure) within the home, it is still livable, connected and modern; but without the constant electric surge throughout that causes our bodies to be inflamed radiation sponges over time.

  • Recommended innovation pipeline for a retailer like MUJI or IKEA so this service can reach more people and places.
